Union County is located in the Northeast Corner of the Beautiful State of New Mexico Union County lies in the Northeast corner of the State of New Mexico with borders touching the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado and the New Mexico counties of Colfax, Harding, and Quay. Clayton is the Union County seat. Clayton is located at the intersections of US Highways 56, 402, 64, and 87. It is 83 miles east of I-25 and 110 miles north of I-40.

The 2000 Census reports Union County as having 4,174 residents. There are four incorporated municipalities in the county, they are: Clayton with 2,524 residents, Des Moines has 177, Folsom has 75, and Grenville has 25.

Union County is 3,830 square miles in size, which constitutes a population density of 1.089 per square mile. The county is defined as a “Rural Frontier” county by definition of having fewer than 2 persons per square mile.

The Union County CDC has launched an industrial development marketing project which focuses on its long standing economic strength, the livestock industry. Union County is ranch and feedlot country and projects, which are currently planned, include a quality beef packing plant and a Biomass ethanol/fertilizer facility.

The community is marketing itself as a location for other businesses, industries and entities, which are affiliated with or provides products or services to the BEEF, DAIRY, or Alternative Energy initiatives.

Bordering the Colorado, Texas and the Oklahoma panhandle, Union County is home to natural wonders, national grasslands, large ranches and dinosaur tracks. The county's largest city and County Seat, Clayton, offers golf, parks, museums and the Union County Fairgrounds. Nearby attractions include sites along the Historic Santa Fe Trail, Clayton Lake State Park, Outlaw Black Jack Ketchum's gravesite and the Kiowa National Grasslands. Folsom, site of the discovery of the historic Folsom Man from ca. 12,000 BC, lies between Clayton and Raton. Capulin Volcano National Monument offers views of New Mexico and parts of four contiguous states: Kansas, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma,
